The Panel of Supervisors is a supervisory and advisory forum, established to oversee the transdisciplinary co-supervision of all PhD students. Each student is registered in a particular faculty and is allocated to a main supervisor plus probably two (but not more than three) co-supervisors from other relevant faculties – depending on the cross-cutting nature of the research theme under discussion. Co-supervisors might also be sourced, for example, from the CSIR and HSRC or, where applicable, from our international partners.

Upon receiving applicants’ written expressions of interest  in the Doctoral Programme, the Panel is involved in the short-listing, interviewing and final selection of successful candidates. The Panel decides on the most appropriate multi-disciplinary team for each individual student. As soon as these multi-disciplinary teams have been constituted, work starts on assisting students in the preparation of their research proposals for final submission to the Admissions Committees of their faculty of registration. Joint participation in the regular PhD seminar series provides further opportunity for interaction as students are required to present and discuss their work-in-progress with fellow students and their supervisors.
